The Center for Migration Studies of New York (CMS) is an educational institute/think tank devoted to the study of international migration, to the promotion of understanding between immigrants and receiving communities, and to public policies that safeguard the dignity and rights of migrants, refugees and newcomers (www.cmsny.org). CMS was established in 1964 and formally incorporated in 1969 by the Congregation of the Missionaries of St. Charles, Scalabrinians, an international community of Catholic priests and religious dedicated to serving migrants and refugees throughout the world. The Center was to carry this injunction forward by an intellectual approach. CMS worked to publicize and help examine the plight of migrants through such means as publishing (both periodicals, monographs and books) and maintaining a research library and archives. As the Center developed and expanded, it sponsored conferences including its Legal Conference, which sought to explore the migrant topic under the general subject, In Defense of the Alien.

Records in this collection pertain in varying degrees to virtually all aspects of the Center’s activities and date from the Center’s inception to 1987. The collection contains executive director files, records related to periodicals and conferences, materials related to projects undertaken, and subject files of interest to CMS.
