International Migration and the Global Community:
A Forum on the Report of the Global Commission
on International Migration

Joseph Chamie and Mary G. Powers, Editors

International Migration and the Global Community is the outcome of a one-day forum held on October 26, 2005 to consider and discuss the recommendations of the Global Commission on International Migration and their implications. The forum was organized jointly by the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Fordham University, and the Center for Migration Studies, with the support of a grant from the MacArthur Foundation.

This publication includes the papers prepared for the forum by eleven leading experts, who were asked to review the Global Commission Report and its Recommendations, with attention to its strengths and any weaknesses. The experts included: Monica Boyd, David A. Coleman, Howard Duncan, Austin T. Fragomen, Jr., Mary M. Kritz, Agustín Escobar Latapí, Peter Lobo, Robert E. B. Lucas, Susan F. Martin, Demitrios Papademitriou, and Michael S. Teitelbaum. For reference, the recommendations of the Report of the Global Commission are included. ISBN 1-57703-047-8 Price: $15.00. Shipping and handling $4.00 first copy, $1.00 each additional copy.

New from CMS From Steel Tracks to Gold-Paved Streets:
The Italian Immigrants and the Railroad in the North Central States,
by Marie-Christine Michaud. ISBN 1-57703-43-5

Completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 spurred the construction of new rail lines throughout the upper Midwest. The Great Northern Railway Company, the Northern Pacific, and the Soo Line were among the many railroad companies that laid tracks and went on to flourish in Minnesota, Wisconsin and beyond.

A previously untold part of this story was
of the work
done by Italian-Americans, a major part of
the labor force. These Italian- Americans toiled on America’s western frontier, rather than staying in the slums and factories of the east coast cities.
Marie-Christine Michaud chronicles their story in this book. Marie-Christine Michaud is Associate Professor at the University of Bretagne Sud, France.

Soft cover. $15.95, plus $4.00 shipping and handling for first copy,
$1.00 each additional copy.
