Completion of the
transcontinental railroad in 1869 spurred the
construction of new rail lines throughout the upper
Midwest. The Great Northern Railway Company, the
Northern Pacific, and the Soo Line were among the
many railroad companies that laid tracks and went on
to flourish in Minnesota, Wisconsin and beyond.

A previously untold part of this story was
of the work
done by Italian-Americans, a major part of
the labor force. These Italian- Americans toiled on
America’s western frontier, rather than staying in
the slums and factories of the east coast cities.
