Philip M. Kayal and Adele L. Younis Papers (CMS 090)
July 15, 2016

The Philip M. Kayal and Adele L. Younis Papers document the research of two scholars studying Arab-Americans and their emigration to the United States. Kayal focused his studies mainly on Melkites, a group of Syrian Catholics and one of their churches in Harlem, the Emmaus House. The collection is composedĀ of materials gather during the course of his research, including newsletters, articles, books, booklets, directories, convention materials, film, and other ephemera. Additionally, the collection contains the papers of Adele Younis and includes her original research notes, her dissertation, short stories she wrote, papers presented at conferences, and articles written by her and others. It also contains a survey of the travels of Elias of Mosul, the first Iraqi Chaldean to explore the Americas in the 1600s. The collection is rich in the Syrian-American immigrant experience, as well as some other Arab-American groups, including the Lebanese-Americans and others.
