On January 6, 2012, Archbishop Silvano M. Tomasi, C.S., the Apostolic Nuncio and Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations and other International Organizations, spoke on the migration-related challenges and priorities faced by the international community at a gathering hosted by the Center for Migration Studies (CMS) and the Scalabrini International Migration Network (SIMN). CMS is an educational institute devoted to the study of migration, to the promotion of understanding between immigrants and receiving communities, and to public policies that safeguard the dignity and rights of migrants and newcomers. Archbishop Tomasi and Fr. Lidio Tomasi founded CMS in 1964, and consecutively directed the Center over its first several decades. SIMN is a global network of more than 270 organizations that provide diverse programs and services to migrants, including shelters in border communities and welcoming (integration) centers in receiving communities.
