On May 22, 2013, the US House Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing titled “S. 744 and the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986: Lessons Learned or Mistakes Repeated?” In a new piece for The Huffington Post, CMS Executive Director Donald Kerwin explores the criticisms against the Gang of 8’s Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act (S. 744) that will potentially emerge from the meeting. Anticipating inaccurate comparisons with the 1986 Act (“IRCA”), Mr. Kerwin presents four principal reasons why lessons drawn from IRCA strongly support the passage of comprehensive immigration legislation.
