A Directory of Italian American Associations in the Tri-State Area: Connecticut, Eastern New Jersey and New York

In this text building on two previous CMS directories, the Center for Migration Studies of New York decided to develop an up-to-date and comprehensive Directory of all Italian and Italian American Associations within the Italian Consular District of New York. When we look at how Italians developed and participated in their own ethnic organizations, we are faced with an enormous proliferation of associations. The proliferation and fragmentation of Italian associations reflects the nature of the Italian American community, which is not homogenous due to the variety of regions/provinces of origin as well as the differences in the background, classes and motivations of Italian immigrants, and the intergenerational subgroupings of the Italian American community.
