Brazilians Away from Home
Teresa Sales
2003

In Brazilians Away From Home, Teresa Sales reports the results of her study of Brazilian immigrants who live in Framingham, Massachusetts. Professor Sales skillfully combines a scholar’s perspective with the personal warmth she finds so characteristic of her fellow Brazilians in this translation of the Portuguese language edition published in 1999. Using survey data, as well as first-person narratives, she chronicles the arrival of a large number of Brazilian immigrants to a Boston suburb, and the resulting revitalization of Framingham’s town center, which had fallen on hard times. It is a must read for those interested in what motivates people to leave a place, and what attracts them to a particular destination.
