From Steerage to Suburb: Long Island Italians

1988

From Steerage to Suburb represents the first major effort to analyze the social history of one of the major immigrant groups in American suburbia. Demographic and economic data on Long Island Italians used here were culled from available public records and integrated with written and oral material to illuminate prevailing patterns of thought, behavior, and lifestyles. This book offers a select social history of the Italian presence in Long Island and analyzes whether the influx to the cities represented substantively different migration and acculturation patterns from that which took place in the suburbs.
