Impossible Citizens: Dubai’s Indian Diaspora

Book by Neha Vora, Lafayette College Reviewed by Sanjukta Mukherjee, DePaul University
Winter 2014

Sanjukta Mukherjee, Assistant Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies at DePaul University, reviews Impossible Citizens: Dubai’s Indian Diaspora. The book is an ethnography of the Indian community in Dubai, focusing on daily experiences and performances of inclusion and exclusion. The book examines the lives of non-citizens who are nonetheless entrenched in Dubai’s socioeconomic fabric and challenge homogenous Arab and Muslim understandings of Gulf societies with their hybridity.
