Translating America: An Immigrant Press Visualizes American Popular Culture, 1895-1918

Book by Peter Conolly-Smith, Union County College Reviewed by David M. Reimers, New York University
Fall 2005

David M. Reimers, Professor of History at New York University, reviews Translating America: An Immigrant Press Visualizes American Popular Culture, 1895-1918. The book is about the German American community in New York City and their encounter with American culture. The author’s American culture sources include three German language newspapers, music, film, etc. The author finds that for many, the American culture began to gradually replace the German culture and individuals no longer spoke German, especially with second and third generations.
