International Migration within Latin America and the Caribbean: An Overview

Sergio Diaz Briquets
1982

The author discusses the direction and magnitude of international migration flows as well as the largely economic determinants of intraregional and international migration within Latin America and the Caribbean. The exploration of determinants includes sections on population growth, social and political conflict, improvements in communication and transportation, wage differentials and ecological factors, among others. The paper also examines migrant characteristics (age, sex, family status, education and occupation) and the consequences of intraregional and international migration in Latin America.
