The Italian American Family: The Southern Italian Family’s Process of Adjustment to an Urban America
Lydio F. Tomasi
1972

The study examines the social world of southern Italians, the intergenerational process from familism to individualism, and the interplay between the individual, family and society. While many social scientists argue that migration, urbanization, and acculturation weaken or destroy kinship bonds outside the nuclear family, “modified extended family” theorists argue that there is a need and capacity for extended families in modern society.
